Taste of Gullah

February 12, 2022

Held during the Hilton Head Island Gullah Celebration throughout the entire month of February is the annual Taste of Gullah festival, taking place right here on the grounds of the Arts Center.

From storytelling to gospel music, dance and more, an afternoon of performances shines the spotlight on Gullah heritage. Entertainment will include performances by El Shaddai gospel choir and storytelling by both Louise Cohen and Natalie Daise.

The Art League of Hilton Head will again host the exhibition "De Aarts Ob We People" in the Walter Greer Gallery.Traditional Gullah basketweavers Michael Smalls and Dino Badger will be on hand to sell and craft their intricate hand-woven sweetgrass baskets, "coiled so tightly they can hold water."

At the Gullah arts and craft stations, children can make their own keepsake while learning about the Gullah culture in a fun, hands-on way.

This festival gets its name from the incredible food prepared by local Gullah cooks, and is truly the highlight of the day! Indulge in Lowcountry specialties including original island gumbo, barbecue ribs, fried fish, shrimp and grits, and shrimp and okra gumbo. Don't miss this quintessential lowcountry festival!
