The Arts Center's Annual Taste of Gullah Celebration

This signature event had its debut the same year the Arts Center opened, and the festival marks the 25-year history of partnership between the Arts Center and the Gullah community.

Residents and visitors alike revel in an afternoon of Gullah culture! In the spotlight is mouthwatering Gullah cuisine — sizzling ribs and chicken on the grill, seasoned-to-perfection shrimp and grits, delicious okra gumbo, and some Lowcountry favorites — giving you a true taste of Gullah.

The festivities also include Gullah-inspired crafts kits to-go, basket-weaving demonstrations, and, inside the Walter Greer Gallery, the Art League of Hilton Head’s annual exhibit and sale of The Arts Ob We People, one of the largest displays of original work by emerging and acclaimed artists representing the life of Gullah people in the Lowcountry.

This free festival is held as part of the Arts Center’s outreach and educational commitment to our greater community, and all ages are welcome to attend.

Traditional Gullah Dishes

Food trucks will be there to provide delicious food, including Melly Mel's incredible offerings such as Conch Stew, Shrimp Gumbo, Fried Chicken, Fried Fish, Oxtail Stew and more!

Another Arts Center food truck fave, Chef B's Eatz, will be onsite cooking up everything from fried seafood platters to Sriracha Honey Chicken.

De Aarts Ob We People

The Art League of Hilton Head will once again host the exhibition De Aarts Ob We People in the Walter Greer Gallery.

In addition, the Art League will be part of the outdoor festivities, selling Gullah-inspired pieces of art, including jewelry and handmade creations.

Traditional Gullah Basketweavers

Michael Smalls and Dino Badger will be in the Walter Greer Gallery crafting their intricate hand-woven sweetgrass baskets, "coiled so tightly they can hold water."

The basket-making tradition has been passed down through generations to Smalls and Badger who will demonstrate this art form.

Gullah T's N' Tings

Sonya Grant of Gullah T’s N’ Tings will be in the box office lobby with her latest Gullah tees, including “Gullah-ish” shirts this Saturday in limited quantities!

The popular “Sweetgrass Tees” and Hilton Head “Community Tees” will also be available.
