Arts Integration Professional Development: Get to Know the Show Creole for Kidz Workshop led by Director of Education Alana Adams Grades K-12 Monday, February 15, 2010 Time-TBA Arts Center of Coastal Carolina
ArtsTeach Program
Note: This program replaces the former Crayola DreamMakers Program and will culminate in a spring student exhibit. The 3 primary goals of this program are: 1. To provide professional development opportunities for teachers in the arts. 2. To provide students with opportunities to learn in a creative classroom environment and display their work for the community. 3. For students and community to gain awareness of an issue or topic that is both current and relevant. A different theme will be chosen each year.*
* The theme for FY 09-10 is “Saving Planet Earth” and the mission is for students and the community to gain awareness as to ways they can become an environmental steward.
Phase I: The Arts Center will offer three professional development workshops for teachers. They will learn the advantages to using the kinesthetic mode of teaching and how to prepare arts-integrated lesson plans. Participating teachers must attend one of the "Fishing for an Answer" workshops and may also participate in the optional Kennedy Center workshop for additional instruction in integrating performing arts.

Exploring the Wetlands Environment Through Movement led by Kennedy Center teaching artist Cissy Whipp Saturday, November 7, 2009 Time: 9:30-12:30 Arts Center of Coastal Carolina Grades K-12
Phase II: After attending at least one of the professional development workshops offered on preparing arts-integrated lesson plans, the participating teachers will then go back into the classroom and write their own lesson plan following this year’s theme “Saving Planet Earth.”
They may choose to use any art form including visual arts, dance, drama, and music as a vehicle to teach their lesson, while covering core content area standards from math, science, or language arts. The product of the lesson has to be in some way related to being an eco-conscious citizen.
After writing the lesson the teachers will administer the lesson in their classrooms and make necessary modifications and adjustments. Next, they will submit the lesson to us for inclusion on an arts-integrated lesson plan flash drive that each of the teachers will receive, encouraging them to continue teaching in and through the arts.
Phase III: Lastly, each teacher will choose the most exemplary works from the project to submit for the juried student art show. Submissions may be visual arts pieces in 2-D or 3-D, taped audio performances such as poetry, monologues, and musical interpretations, or video taped performances.
The culminating student exhibit will be multi-sensory including a gallery-style visual arts show, video projections, and oral works played over the audio system in the gallery.
By expressing their knowledge through the arts, they are not only learning, but creating and in the end, teaching others through the exhibit about what it means to be an environmental steward. The ArtsTeach: Saving Planet Earth show will run from March 4 - 28 in the Walter Greer Gallery with the opening reception to be held on Thursday, March 4, 2010.
